Dontae, Dontae, Dontae.

Thursday, June 10th, 2004

Today’sBirmingham news has a piece on former MSU player Dontae Walker. Dontae seems to think the Arena Football 2 League is his stepping stone to the “the league”, meaning the NFL. “I’m trying to bounce back,” said Walker. “All I can do is take it one day at a time. I’m letting the scouts see [...]

Ron Polk, dinosaur.

Tuesday, June 8th, 2004

LSU softball coach Yvette Girouard mentioned MSU baseball coach Ron Polk at the Baton Rouge Press Club the other day: Girouard said she doesn’t believe men’s sports have or have had to suffer to make room for women. “(Baseball coach) Ron Polk at Mississippi State is critical because he has 11.7 scholarships in baseball and [...]

College Board names chair of Ath. Dept. probe.

Tuesday, June 8th, 2004

Amy Whitten of Oxford (hmmm) has been named co-chair of the oversight committee along side MSU President Charles Lee looking into the Athletic Department. Thankfully, Scott Ross, of the Ross-Klumb troublemaking duo, stepped aside. Today’s Sun Herald says this: Some board members said, because of that, he shouldn’t be in charge of the review process. [...]

Young players have Polk optimistic about next year

Monday, June 7th, 2004

From today’s Sun Herald: “We just didn’t pitch as well as I thought we were going to early in the season,” Polk said. “I think that was the downfall from a typical Mississippi State season.” Polk insisted his team deserved a shot in the NCAAs after missing the conference tournament by one game in the [...]

Fred Smoot, back at it.

Sunday, June 6th, 2004

Get a load of this quote from Monday’s Washington Post: “It’s a gimme that I’m going to make the Pro Bowl; it’s a gimme,” said Smoot, who has never received that honor. “But I’m not really worried about the individual awards; I’m worried about playing in the playoffs. I’ve been in the league too long [...]

Thornton scores, Henig barely plays. And, yawn, Gab O’Neal and Anthony Stauder combine for 1 solo tackle and 6 assisted tackles. Boxscore is here.

Is it football season yet?

Sunday, June 6th, 2004

Yup, pretty much. State is bounced from the NCAA’s by Texas Tech. The Dogs choked away a 7-4 lead in the top of the 8th. Sound familiar? “It happens to everybody,” Tatum said. “There’s nothing wrong with it, it was just bad timing.” That’s baseball! And now it’s football. Thank God.

Cha-ching!

SEC schools divide record $108.8 million according to the Baton Rouge Advocate. Mississippi State University’s share is $9.08 million.

Hey, how ’bout that.

Three former Lady Bulldogs are now playing professional fast pitch softball. “Iyhia McMicheal, a two-time all-American with the Bulldogs who recently played her final game in Maroon and White, was the first overall pick in the 2003-04 NPF Senior Draft in December and now makes her home with the Akron (OH) Racers.” That’s great. And [...]

MSU v. TT

Texas Tech coach Larry Hayes is a moron.

Friday, June 4th, 2004

Check out this gem from the Savannah Morning News’ preview of the Atlanta regional: Texas Tech typically stays out West for the NCAA baseball tournament. That led to some confusion by Red Raiders coach Larry Hays, who critiqued tourney newcomer Jacksonville State by saying “They’re from Florida, so they must be good.” Jacksonville State is [...]

Bulldogs rested and motivated

Friday, June 4th, 2004

And I helped. This from Craig Tatum: “The thing this team is (motivated by) is that nobody expected us to be here. Even on the NCAA selection show, the commentator was like ‘I don’t know if they (MSU) should have been in there.’ So I guess we’ve got a little something extra to prove.” You’re [...]
