TULANE GREEN WAVE:
2003 RECORD: 5-7, 3-5 C-USA COACH: Chris Scelfo (26-34 at Tulane and career) THE BRIGHT SIDE: The Green Wave took some lumps last season by playing young but talented players on both sides of the football, especially on defense. The Green Wave should improve on the defensive side this season. Since 1999, Tulane has rebounded from a losing season with a winning campaign. REASONS TO WORRY: Scelfo must replace quarterback J.P. Losman (first-round pick of Buffalo Bills) and Mewelde Moore (fourth-round pick of Minnesota Vikings). Tulane has had success at quarterback in the past and will hand the mantle to sophomore Lester Ricard, a transfer from LSU. SIZING UP THE FRONT LINES: Offensive line average, 6-4/288; defensive line average, 6-3/273. HAWAII BOWL BOUND IF: Tulane can be a dangerous team, especially if a quarterback emerges to distribute the ball to a dandy receiving corps. The Green Wave looks to be a year away from seriously contending in C-USA, but it could spring a surprise or two this season. BIRMINGHAM NEWS PREDICTED FINISH: Eighth.
