Believe the hype
With the signing of the Delk twins and the likely signing today of two the nation’s premier high schoolers, Vernon Goodridge and Monta Ellis, MSU’s latest recruiting class is expected to be tops in the SEC and top 10 nationally. Normally, I don’t buy into recruiting hype. We’ve seen how top 25 recruiting classes don’t necessarily result in top 25 teams in football. However, basketball is a different story.
Today’s basketball is a sport more based upon athletic ability rather than technique or schemes, meaning prepsters can come in and make immediate impacts on the college game - and sometimes the pro game. Add to it the fact most blue chip recruits are able to compete at a high-level year round through AAU, Nike and Addias camps. These kids are far more developed, skills-wise, than their football counterparts. To be sure, freshman must come in and learn the system, but most won’t have to spend a year in the weight room or at the training table building their bodies up - unless they’re Marcus Campbell.
