Teams in transition: Several teams that have been consistent winners took a step back from their previous form in 2004. Florida dropped to 7-4, its fewest wins since 1989, the year before Steve Spurrier arrived. Mississippi did not handle the loss of Eli Manning well, falling to 4-7. Arkansas, which had been to six consecutive bowls, fell to 5-6. Mississippi State, which was starting over under new coach Sylvester Croom, was 3-8 — and that included a loss to I-AA Maine.
