The C-Boys look to step in early at MSU
State signees Calvin Wilson, Chris Spencer and Craig Jenkins will all take part in this week’s Alabama-Miss All-Star football game. OL signee Johnny Carpenter will play for the Alabama team. They also expect to play early, filling holes left by recent departures.
“In a perfect world, we’d love to redshirt these guys, but I don’t think that’s going to be the case for us,” Mississippi State offensive line coach J.B. Grimes said. “I think some of these guys will have to bite the bullet and be ready.”…”I’m not the type of player to sit on the bench,” Wilson said. “I wanted to go somewhere where I could compete for a starting position and see playing time.” …Mississippi State has been a believer in the “bigger is better” mantra in recent years, but Spencer thinks the emphasis in Starkville is changing. He said players like 6-3, 285-pound Citronelle guard Johnny Carpenter, who will play for the Alabama squad on Saturday, are the type of linemen the Bulldogs are looking for now, and noted that Grimes and strength coach Jim Nowell have stressed the importance of arriving on campus in shape…”They’d rather you come in undersized than oversized, because it’s so much easier to gain weight than lose weight,” Spencer said. “(Nowell) wrote in big bold letters, ‘Do not come in overweight. You will be sorry.” …”I listened. I was 310. I’m 283 now.”
