Strength coach talks about newcomers
MSU strength and conditioning coach Jim Nowell talked to the Columbus Commercial Dispach about the incoming freshmen:
‘We had them run 16, 110 (yards) sprints with 45 seconds of rest in between,’ said Nowell, who has also worked at LSU and West Virginia. ‘We never allow our players to bend over and show weakness. If they do, it’s a penalty for the whole group and one more rep (sprint) is added. I think we ran 22 yesterday. So they don’t know yet exactly what it takes. Now some were not like that and came to campus in great shape, but these drills are tough regardless of the shape they are in.’…Nowell spoke highly of the condition of the rookie Bulldogs, players like quarterback Ty Evans, defensive end Quinton Wesley, defensive back Jarvis Kyles, punter-defensive back Blake McAdams and defensive lineman Charles Burns, who Nowell said was ‘in unbelievable shape.’….’We probably have five or six (newcomers) that have really been doing some running,’ said Nowell. ‘Now others have been running, too, but not exactly the way we want them. These guys are not there yet but I expect them to be used to this in a week or two.’
