NCAA Backs Away From FSU
The mighty NCAA stepped back from one of its most recent decisions and declared that it would allow Florida State to continue using the “Seminoles” name and mascot.
“The staff review committee noted the unique relationship between the university and the Seminole Tribe of Florida as a significant factor,” the NCAA said Tuesday. “The decision of a namesake sovereign tribe, regarding when and how its name and imagery can be used, must be respected even when others may not agree.”
The president of FSU had threatened a lawsuite against the NCAA over the issue. Other schools will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis to determine if they will be allowed to use their Native American mascots in postseasaon play. Among those teams are the Illinois Illini, the Utah Utes and the North Dakota Fighting Souix.
