MSU Signs Pensacola Infielder Jet Butler

Via Media Relations

Mississippi State University has signed infielder James E. (Jet) Butler III of Pensacola, Fla., to a baseball scholarship, head baseball coach Ron Polk announced Wednesday.

Butler is a 6-2, 185-pound middle infielder at Pensacola’s Tate High School, where he is coached by Todd Boyd. As a junior he batted .400 with 32 hits, helping lead the Aggies to a 28-2 record, the 2005 Florida Class 4A State Championship and a No. 13 national ranking by Baseball America.

“We are certainly pleased with Jet’s decision to continue his athletic and academic careers at Mississippi State University,” said Polk. “He’s an outstanding young man who has excelled both in the classroom and on the field. He is a highly-skilled athlete while competing at Tate High School in one of the South’s premier baseball programs, and we look forward to his joining the Bulldog baseball program next fall.”

Recently named to the 2006 PUMA Pre-season High School All-American team, Butler was selected to play in the 2005 Florida Diamond Club All-Star Game in Tampa, Fla., the National Blue-Grey Classic last summer in Tampa Bay, Fla., and on the Dixie National Team at the USA Baseball Junior National Trials conducted in Joplin, Mo. He was also chosen to take part in the Area Code Games in Long Beach, Calif., the East Coast Professional Showcase in Wilmington, N.C., the Perfect Game National Showcase held at Turner Field in Atlanta, Ga., and the Team One National Showcase in Las Vegas, Nev., where he was named the event’s No. 2 prospect. He was recently selected to compete for the Baseball America National Team at this month’s WWBA World Championships held in Jupiter, Fla.

“In making my decision, I came to the conclusion that the best place in the country to play college baseball is Mississippi State University,” said Butler. “I have tremendous respect for Coach Polk and his staff and the way they approach the game. I am looking forward to the Bulldogs having great success and winning championships in the years ahead.”

A member of the Tate High School Hall of Fame, Butler is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the National Honor Society.

The MSU baseball signee is the son of Skip and Karen Butler of Pensacola, Fla. His sister, Charity Butler, is a member of the Southern Miss softball team while his father, Skip, is a graduate of Mississippi College where he was a member of MC’s baseball team.
