Mississippi State senior defensive end Willie Evans (Waynesboro, Miss.) has been named one of six finalists for the Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award, the organization’s foundation announced Thursday.
Evans, a 6-2, 270-pounder, leads the Southeastern Conference in both quarterback sacks (11.5) and tackles for loss (15.5) this season. He currently ranks third in the league in tackles by a defensive lineman (5.2 per game). A second-team, all-SEC player last year, Evans had 14.5 tackles for loss, five and one-half sacks during his junior campaign. He has now recorded a tackle for loss in 18 of his last 20 games and a sack in 13 of his last 15 contests, dating to last season.
Evans joins Louisville’s Elvis Dumervil, Penn State’s Tamba Hali, Boston College’s Mathias Kiwanuka, Rutgers’ Ryan Neill and Virginia Tech’s Darryl Tapp as finalists for the Hendricks Award.
Named for Pro Football Hall of Famer Ted Hendricks, the award is given annually to the nation’s premier defensive end.
