Mississippi State University has signed pitcher Jared Wesson of Tupelo, Miss., to a baseball scholarship, head baseball coach Ron Polk announced Monday.
Wesson is a 6-5, 190-pound left-handed pitcher at Itawamba Community College in Fulton, Miss., where he is coached by Rick Collier. Wesson sat out the 2005 season at ICC after undergoing successful Tommy John surgery on his left elbow. He will pitch for Collier’s 2006 ICC Indians in the coming season.
“We are pleased that this outstanding left-handed pitcher will be joining our pitching staff next year,” said Polk. “Jared has great pitching skills and he will be a tremendous asset to our mound corps.”
Wesson posted a 6-1 record in American Legion baseball last summer, compiling an 0.42 earned run average and 52 strikeouts over 42 innings for the Tupelo 49ers, coached by Kirk Presley. He was a three-year letterman at Tupelo High School where he was coached by Gary Enis. As a senior he did not allow an earned run and posted a 3-0 mark in 17 innings of mound duty.
“Signing with Mississippi State is a dream come true,” said Wesson. I am excited about playing for Coach Polk and the rest of the coaching staff.”
Wesson, a 2004 honors graduate of Tupelo High School, earned all-state and all-area honors in baseball his senior season and also was a four-year member of the Golden Wave basketball team.
The MSU baseball signee is the son of Malcolm and Pat Wesson of Tupelo, Miss., both graduates of Mississippi State University. His father was a member of the Mississippi State basketball team from 1970 to 1973.
