Mississippi State University head track and field coach Al Schmidt has announced the signing of Starkville High School track athlete Santana Lowery to a national-letter-of-intent. Lowery will begin competing for the Lady Bulldogs during the 2006-07 season.
Lowery will work closely with assistant coach Kurt Thomas, who oversees women’s sprints.
“Santana is a great addition to our team,” Thomas said. “She is such a top quality sprinter, who is obviously one of the best in the nation. She will help with the future of our sprints program. We’re happy she chose to stay close to home.”
One of the most recognized faces on the junior track circuit, Lowery has competed at the Amateur Athletic Union’s Junior Nationals in Detroit, Michigan, winning the 200-meter dash. She is a Junior Nationals regional record holder in the 200 (24.5 seconds) and a personal record 400-meter dash (54.00).
Last year, she was invited to compete at the New York Armory Indoor Meet at the New Balance Track and Field Center in New York City. At the 2005 National Scholastic Indoor Championships, Lowery ran a 7.51 in the 60 to finish fourth. She took second in the 200 with a time of 23.94.
Under head coach Bill Reeves, Lowery has seen limited action due to injury, but she competed at the Mississippi High School Activities Association’s Class 5A state meet as a freshman. Lowery took second in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. As a junior, she ran a personal record 11.26 in the 100 at the Falcon Relays to set a new meet record. During the indoor season, she won the 55-meter dash at the LSU High School Invitational, clocking in at 6.92 seconds. Lowery’s personal record in the 200 is 23.7.
Lowery was recognized as Starkville High School’s Most Athletic, Best Friend and Most Valuable Player. She also received the Comeback Award.
“I’m very excited to be staying close to home,” Lowery said. “It’ll be an experience. I’m nervous. It’s a big opportunity to run against such great competition.”
Lowery is undecided on her major. She is the daughter of Susie Lowery and former Mississippi State football player David Fair.
