Ricky Woods had 15 points and 15 rebounds to lead Southeastern Louisiana in a 57-46 win over Mississippi State on Monday.

The SLU Lions (2-1) made nine of 18 three point attempts to topple Mississippi State (3-2) for the first time in the 16-game series.

The loss was the second straight for MSU (3-2), who lost a one point overtime game to Northwestern State Saturday.

The Bulldogs, who started three freshmen, only dressed out eight players. Starters Piotr Stelmach and Dietric Slater were both sidelined with ankle injuries, and forward Charles Rhodes was sick.

Southeastern Louisiana, a veteran team that starts four seniors, took their largest lead of the game, 50-38, with eight minutes to go after hitting four consecutive three point shots.

The Bulldogs switched from a 2-3 zone defense to man-to-man, but it was too late.

Mississippi State pulled within eight points twice over the final three minutes, but Woods hit two shots and made a free throw down the stretch to seal SLU’s second straight win.

After going one for five in the first half from three point range, Lion guard Quennell Green made all four attempts from beyond the arc in the second half.

He finished with 15 points. SLU guard Daryl Cohen finished with 10 points.

MSU center Wesley Morgan tallied a career-high 21 rebounds and 10 points. Jamall Edmondson had 14 on a five for a 19 shooting night, and Jamont Gordon finished with 13 points.

Each team struggled offensively in the first half, which included five lead changes.

MSU shot 27 percent, and SLU shot 26 percent.

The Bulldogs trailed, 13-10, midway through the opening half before holding the Lions scoreless for nearly five minutes, going on a 9-0 run to take a 19-13 lead.

But Southeastern Louisiana roared back to tie the game at 22 with Cohen’s three-pointer, ending the half.

MSU only shot 25 percent from the field. The Lions made 35 percent of their shots, including 44 percent in the second half.
