Croom In Tuscaloosa News

Not sure how I missed this on July 29, but here is a great article by Cecil Hurt of the Tuscaloosa News talking about Croom. The best quote:

By the time Croom finished his 40-minute media session, he had surpassed Mike Shula — you know, the guy who actually coaches at Alabama — by a 5-to-1 margin in references to Crimson Tide history.

Yeah, Croom talks a lot about his days at Alabama, but that is really the only comparative experience he has to what he is doing at Mississippi State. He can’t really relay any of his experience from his NFL positions, save a few references to the West Coast Offense or his time coaching running backs at Green Bay, because the NFL and College are two totally different beasts.

Most of the article talks about Croom and his continuous mention of building a national championship team at State. Can it be done? That remains to be seen. I think this is the first year that he has the players he needs to efficiently run his WCO, so we should definitely see more wins than the past two years.

Croom insists that it can happen in Starkville, and that his team is turning in the right direction. For the first time, he says, he has the personnel — specifically, the receivers — to run the West Coast offense that he installed in 2004. He clearly is more comfortable with his own recruits than he was with those he inherited from Jackie Sherrill.

I think Henig describes this upcoming season perfectly:

“The time for patience is over,” he said when he met with the media. “We know we’ve got to hit the ground running.”
