STARKVILLE, Miss. - For the second consecutive year, a school-record 16 regular-season home games highlight Mississippi State University’s 2006-07 men’s basketball schedule, as announced this week by MSU Director of Athletics Larry Templeton.
In addition, MSU’s competitive 2006-07 men’s basketball slate will feature 17 outings against opponents that participated in either the NCAA Tournament or National Invitation Tournament a season ago.
Playing eight of their first 10 games at 10,500-seat Humphrey Coliseum, coach Rick Stansbury’s 2006-07 Bulldogs will tip off the school’s 95th season of collegiate basketball competition with a three-game homestand by playing host to Nicholls State (Nov. 11), Loyola Marymount (Nov. 13) and reigning NCAA Tournament participant Winthrop (Nov. 18).
Entering the new campaign with a 15-game, non-SEC road winning streak that dates back to the 2000-01 season, MSU’s first chance to extend that impressive string takes place Nov. 21 at Clemson of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Following post-Thanksgiving home dates against Charlotte (Nov. 29), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Dec. 2) and South Alabama (Dec. 9), the Bulldogs will hit the road again to take on another ACC foe in Miami of Florida on Dec. 11. Home contests versus McNeese State (Dec. 16) and Alabama State (Dec. 18) will precede a Dec. 21 meeting with the University of New Orleans to take place at Jackson’s Mississippi Coliseum. This season will mark the fourth time in the last five years that Mississippi State will compete in the state’s capital city.
The Bulldogs are slated to close out regular-season, non-conference play with challenging road stops at reigning NCAA Final Four entry George Mason and Big 12 Conference member Missouri on Dec. 30 and Jan. 2, respectively.
State’s 16-game SEC schedule tips off with a Jan. 7 road contest against Tennessee, followed by a Jan. 10 home battle versus in-state rival Mississippi. After a Jan. 13 visit to Kentucky, the Bulldogs return to Starkville for a rare three-game conference homestand. Following a Jan. 20 home outing against Auburn, MSU will entertain back-to-back national champions Florida (NCAA) and South Carolina (NIT) at “The Hump” on Jan. 24 and 27, respectively. MState concludes the month of January by heading to Oxford to meet the Ole Miss Rebels in a season rematch set to be aired nationally on a Tuesday night (Jan. 30) by ESPN.
This year’s SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament will be held March 8-11 at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome.
