The Diamond Dawgs won the first round of regional NCAA tournament play Friday by defeating Stetson.

Mitch Moreland broke a scoreless tie with a solo home run in the fourth and Mississippi State pulled away to a 6-3 victory over Stetson in the regional opener.

The Bulldogs broke the game open with a three-run sixth on RBI singles by Russ Sneed and Jeffrey Rea. Joseph McCaskill’s run-scoring groundout pushed the lead to 5-0. McCaskill collected three of the Bulldogs’ 13 hits.

Mississippi State will play Florida State at 7pm on Saturday.
