State Sweeps Tallahassee Regional, Defeats Seminoles

Via Media Relations

Mississippi State completed a perfect opening weekend in the 2007 NCAA Baseball Championship Sunday night, downing host Florida State, the nation’s No. 6 seed overall, 9-4 to claim the crown of the Tallahassee Regional. The victory moves MSU into NCAA Super Regional play, which will be held next weekend at eight sites across the country.

This weekend, State downed Stetson 6-3 Friday and Florida State 3-0 Saturday before posting the triumph over the Seminoles Sunday night to claim the regional title.

Sunday night, the Bulldogs unleashed 14 hits on FSU while limiting Seminole hitters to just six to secure the win.

Florida State, officially the visiting team in the contest, wasted no time in taking a lead in the game when Jack Rye hit a two-run home run in the top of the first. But State bounced right back in the bottom of the frame with two long balls of its own - a two-run knock from Brandon Turner and a solo shot from Brian LaNinfa.

After Florida State tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the third, State answered again, this time with three runs, all coming after two outs in the inning. Russ Sneed had a two-run single and Jet Butler followed with an infield hit that plated another run.

State tacked on another run in the fourth with an RBI double by Mitch Moreland for a 7-3 lead.

The Seminoles would manage only one more run the rest of the way - another homer from Rye, coming in the top of the sixth.

MSU padded the lead in the bottom of the eighth when Moreland ripped a single which scored Jeffrey Rea and Turner.

Josh Johnson worked six innings to pick up the victory for the Diamond Dogs. He allowed four runs and struck out six. FSU starter Danny Rosen suffered the defeat, allowing six runs in just 2 2/3 innings on the mound.
