Kirk Herbstreit Loves The Lil Dooey
Kirk Herbstreit released his Seventh Annual Herbie Awards. The Lil’ Dooey in Starkville tops his list of favorite restaurants this year. It has been on the top of his list since at least 2005 (does anyone know how long he has had it as #1?).
I know lots of people love Lil Dooey, but what is your favorite BBQ when visiting Starkvegas?

I’m all about Petty’s barbeque on the side of Hwy. 12. I know it’s a shack and they didn’t even build the deck seating area until ‘98 or so.

Here’s another vote for Petty’s. What I used to love was that you could go there on game day before or after the game and get some good food without having to wait 2 hours. That’s because nobody (including Herbstreit) knows where it is. Haven’t been to Starkville for 7 years so I don’t know if it’s still that way.

I went to State from 98-00 and I cannot for the life of me remember the name of this place now, but if you travel on 82 east from campus and instead of exiting to the main part of 82, continue straight on 182 for a mile or so and take a right on 16 Section Road. There was this complete hole-in-the-wall on the west side of 16 Section Road that was family-owned (and I’m pretty sure they lived behind the BBQ shack). I had Petty’s, I had Dooies’, but this place gets my vote for best BBQ in Starkvegas. The sandwiches were big, smoky, and CHEAP!!

It was Sonny’s, J Cooper. And it was the absolute best in North Mississippi. I have no clue if it is still there, though.

Boy, my memory is shot. I was thinking of Sonny’s, not Petty’s. I did like Petty’s, which I remember as a truck on Highway 12. But Sonny’s had them beat.
