Josh Riddell

After the pitiful performance by starting QB Michael Henig against LSU, the first name that fans started to throw around was Josh Riddell. Unfortunately, he was serving a suspension from the team during the LSU game. It didn’t take too long for Croom to lift the suspension Friday afternoon. Before his suspension, he was rated #2 on the depth chart, and would have seen playing time when Henig was pulled in the third quarter. Instead, we got a glimpse of true freshman Wesley Carroll.

Croom has already said on at least one occasion this week that he will play whoever gives us the best chance to win the game, whether that is Henig, Riddell, or Carroll.

I think what makes fans want to see Riddell in action the most are his stats coming out of Foothill College, a Junior College in California. Here is a rundown of Riddell’s performance over 2 years in JUCO.

  • Threw for 5,333 yards and 54 touchdowns
  • Rushed 55 times for 159 yards
  • 185-of-314 passes (.589) for 3,360 yards and 36 touchdowns, 12 interceptions during his sophomore season
  • 164-of-289 passing (57 percent) for 1,973 yards, 18 touchdowns, 9 interceptions during his freshman season
  • Led Foothill College to a two-year, 18-4 overall record
  • Two Silicon Valley Bowl championships
  • Third-team, junior college all-America after his sophomore season
  • Named the Offensive Most Valuable Player, Silicon Valley Bowl
  • Lead the Owls to a 10-1 record and a national No. 4-ranked finish his sophomore season

On paper, he looks to be a great QB. How well that will translate to the SEC is still a big question, but a question that most State fans hope to see answered this weekend.

Mississippi State travels to Tulane for a 6pm game on Saturday, September 8. The game will be broadcast by Comcast Sports Southeast.
