Mississippi State vs. Auburn Game Notes

After a win over Tulane in the Superdome, the Bulldogs travel to the plains of Auburn to take on the Tigers. Auburn is coming off an overtime upset at the hands South Florida and will be looking to get back in the grove against Mississippi State.

After the USF upset, Auburn definitely looks like a beatable team. If our defense can play as aggressively as they did against LSU, we should be able to rattle Brandon Cox enough to force some turnovers and put up at least a touchdown.

On the Auburn defense, Quentin Groves is scary. He was in the backfield all night against USF and is super fast coming off the line. Our offensive line has looked great in the first two games, so lets hope they can keep it up against the Auburn D.

Speaking of our offense, Henig will be going up against a good secondary, featuring Tray Blackmon at middle linebacker and Aairon Savage at free safety, although there has been talk that they may be questionable for play against State because of some injuries. Even still, Henig looked good throwing against the Tulane secondary, but they aren’t that great. Auburn is better, and will end up with at least 1 or 2 picks before the game is over.

As for the run game, the slow sweeps we are running with Dixon aren’t working. He is a power back and does better running inside and counter plays. Use his strength to power through the line then his burners to gain yardage before the secondary closes in. South Florida ran lots of running plays against Auburn, so I think our backs will have a great day.

Overall, I look for it to be a close game. The main advantage Auburn will have over us is their kicking game. Wes Byrum is 6-of-7 on the year, and has a great range, missing only a 47-yard attempt against Kansas State.

There are still plenty of Mississippi State vs. Auburn tickets available. It would be awesome to see the Maroon and White make the trip to Jordan-Hare Stadium for the game.
