Derek Pegues Gets SEC Special Teams Player of the Week Nod

Mississippi State defensive back and special teams player Derek Pegues has earned SEC Special Teams Player of the Week for his 75-yard punt return in the 4th quarter that helped Mississippi State comeback from a 14-0 deficit to defeat rival Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl.

  • Pegues returned a fourth-quarter punt 75 yards for a touchdown to help lift Mississippi State to a 17-14 come-from-behind win against Ole Miss.
  • The 75-yard return was the second longest and the second for a touchdown in his career.
  • He was also credited with a three tackles, one for a loss, and a season-best three pass deflections against the Rebels.
  • Pegues ranks ninth all-time with 1,776 career kickoff return yards.

The defensive back also claimed defensive player of the week honors following State’s win over Auburn earlier in the season, and he becomes the first MSU player to be honored twice in the same year since Jerious Norwood claimed the offensive award two times in 2004.

Pegues’ award marks the fifth time an MSU player has earned player of the week honors this season. Gabe O’Neal, Pegues, Avery Hannibal and Anthony Johnson earned defensive player of the week honors earlier in the year.
