Gregg Ellis is reporting via Houston Nutt (of all people) that Louis Campbell has indeed been hired by Mississippi State to be the linebackers coach. Since Ellis Johnson was linebackers coach in addition to being defensive coordinator, this hiring confirms rumors that Croom will promote a current assistant to the DC position. This will likely be Charlie Harbison or Melvin Smith, with most guessing Harbison will get the nod in an attempt to keep him from going to Arkansas with Johnson.

Nutt on Campbell: “Louis has strong ties with Sylvester Croom and Rockey Felker. They stole a good one.”

The announcement about the defensive coordinator position is expected as early as today.
