Bulldogs Complete Acclimation Period In Full Pads

STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State completed its NCAA-mandated five acclimation days of football practice Monday, working in full gear during preseason camp for the first time.

The early morning practice and its rising temperatures, coupled with the first time in full pads, initially took a toll on the Bulldogs.

“I thought we started off poorly,” head coach Sylvester Croom said, “but we finished up well, particularly during the team periods. I thought we got a little better today, and that’s my goal, to get a little mentally tougher each day.”

The heat had an effect on at least one Bulldog. True freshman defensive lineman Kyle Love (Fairburn, Ga.) retired from practice less than 30 minutes from its conclusion, the temperature having gotten the better part of him. Junior linebacker Gabe O’Neal (Columbus, Miss.) missed part of the Monday work after suffering a shoulder bruise.

Senior wide receiver Will Prosser (Starkville, Miss.) and junior cornerback Demario Bobo (Courtland, Miss.) were elevated from a red-cross jersey to non-contact work. Junior offensive tackle J.D. Hamilton (Natchez, Miss.) and true freshman halfback Anthony Dixon (Jackson, Miss.) sported red-cross jerseys and walking boots on ankle sprains.
