Jerious Norwood Awarded Conerly Trophy
Jerious Norwood was awarded the Cellular South Conerly Trophy at a ceremony in Jackson Wednesday night. The Conerly trophy is awarded each year to Mississippi’s best college football player. Jerious had has an outstanding career at Mississippi State, rushing for back-to-back 1000 yard seasons and breaking the record for Career Rushing Yards, finally topping out at 3,222 yards. He has also rushed for more 100 yard games than any other player in MSU history.
Congrats to Norwood and good luck in whatever you choose to do. A transcript of Norwood’s acceptance speech is below.
“Well first of all, I’d like to give honor to God for giving me the ability to do what I do on the football field. You know it gets kinda hard sometimes when guys like Pat trying to take my head off.
“I had a lot fun playing in college and just I’m just glad to be here. I might get emotional.
“The reason I’m getting emotional is because I’m thinking about my grandmother. And I know that… when I was in high school I used to talk to my grandmother about football. She was always telling me to follow my heart. I know right now I wish she could be here, but she is in Chicago. My heart told me to go to Mississippi State. Thanks to Coach Croom and the staff. I couldn’t be in a better place. Coach, I appreciate everything you have done for me and the program. I want everyone to know that that the Mississippi State program is on the rise. We finished strong this year beating Ole Miss and I’m pretty sure that they’ll continue to get better in the future.
“I’d like to thank Mrs. Conerly for allowing me to be here tonight and allowing me to be the reciepiant of this award. These guys right here deserve this award as much as I do.
“I want to thank the media for standing beside me and my high school coaches and my teachers that helped me to get to this point and my family: they were beside me the whole way.
“I would like to say something to the young kids in the world. Just don’t anyone tell you that you can’t do nothing because Philippians 4:13 says ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me’. That’s where I get my strength from: it’s not me, it’s God.
“I had a great time playing college football and I’m just glad to be a part of this experience tonight. Once again, thanks to everyone who allowed me to come out tonight and receive this award.”
