To prep for this weekend’s game against Kentucky, I sent some questions over to fellow SEC Power Poll voter Glenn from the UK blog A Sea of Blue to learn more about the Wildcats. Here are my questions in bold along with his answers.
Kentucky seems to have had a pretty good year, playing Alabama and South Carolina in close games. What happened against Florida?
A combination of things, as you might expect. I think the coaches did a poor job in preparing the team, we were banged up and huge underdogs, and the guys in Blue and White just became demoralized after two straight punt blocks. In one block, the Florida player knocked a UK blocker on his backside and trod on his chest en route to an easy block. The confusion on Kentucky’s sidelines immediately after said it all. The team just imploded after that.
Fortunately, I learned that team that showed up in Gainesville was really a bunch of impostors from the Twilight Zone who entered the Wildcat players’ bodies and possessed them for a few hours. I have since been assured that the mountebanks have been duly exorcised and everything is much better now.
Who are some of the players on offense and defense that Mississippi State should be concerned about?
Offense: Randall Cobb. The true freshman has poise beyond his years and dynamite quickness. He will put great pressure on your linebackers to make the right reads every time, or suffer a loose skill player in the secondary.
Defense: Normally, I would say Micah Johnson, but he is hurt. The player you should therefore fear, and I guarantee you will, is Trevard Lindley, our cover corner. Alabama challenged him, and got picked. Tebow challenged him, and got a touchdown on a perfect throw and then got picked. Arkansas challenged him, and got picked for a UK defensive touchdown. After the INT, none of those teams went there again.
Sense a pattern here?
What is the mood among Kentucky fans about Rich Brooks? With the next head coach already named in Joker Phillips, are fans ready for Brooks to leave?
Most Kentucky fans are pretty fatalistic about football even now. We are a basketball school, and have yet to learn how to be proper football fans in the SEC. We either treat football as a stepchild or act as if we are 5-3 after being picked pre-season to be in the BCS championship game. In other words, we are all over the map.
Some grumping about Brooks and even Phillips is going on, but it is half-hearted and gratuitous. I don’t think anyone is anxious to see Brooks leave. He has earned an awful lot of latitude.
Our teams seem to be evenly matched on offense (96 vs. 104) and defense (25 vs. 22). Do you see this as being a pretty defensive game? Give me a prediction.
I really do. I think it will be a close game with both defenses doing a good job. Cobb is a bit of an X-factor, because you won’t be seeing the offense everyone else has. On the other hand, your defense is far healthier than ours is, which should be a concern for the UK coaching staff. Plus, the Bulldogs have home field advantage, which will help a lot.
When all is said and done, I think the game will be in the 20’s max. I’ll say 21-17 UK.
