LaTech Game Day Linkage

Here are some stories that popped up in my inbox this morning.

Ethan Conley at the Monroe News Star walks through the keys of today’s game and what it will take for the LaTech Bulldogs to come out victorious. He highlights our obvious weakness in the passing game from last year – a weakness that won’t be helped by the absence of Jaymel Smith or the shuffling of the O-line if Sherrod ends up missing today’s game. Their main concern may be stopping our backfield.

Jim Mashek writes a good overview of the game for the SunHerald as well.

Croom’s squad returns plenty of talent from last year’s breakthrough season, when State posted a winning record for the first time since 2000 and earned its eighth victory by stopping Central Florida 10-3 in the Liberty Bowl. State will be without its All-SEC safety, Derek Pegues, who is serving a one-game suspension for academic reasons, but MSU’s defense has proven players such as defensive tackle Kyle Love, linebacker Jamar Chaney and safety De’Mon Glanton.

Chris Talbott of the Commercial Appeal talks over the same points about todays game. First SEC team in Ruston since 1913; LaTech is the under dog, etc., this time with some quotes thrown in from sophomore QB Wesley Carroll.

“We have obviously very high expectations right now,” sophomore quarterback Wesley Carroll said. “This season can be as great as we want it to be or if we don’t focus and play as hard as we possibly can, it can also be a real upsetting season. I think all the guys are right now in line. Everybody’s focused and healthy, and ready to roll right now.”

Carroll’s freshman performance helped the Bulldogs to coach Sylvester Croom’s first winning season. Carroll returns more prepared to lead an offense that looks an awful lot like last season’s. Mississippi State brings an old-fashioned power-running scheme to Ruston, led by Anthony Dixon and Christian Ducre.

Kickoff is set for 5:45pm and the game will be televised on ESPN2.
