Mississippi State – Georgia Tech Linkage

Blogging was light the past day or two, so here is some linkage to wet your appetite for the upcoming game against Georgia Tech.

Leading off the linkage, the Albany Herald has a piece on how this is a rare match up for Mississippi State and Georgia Tech – the first since 1929, despite the fact they were in the same conference for 30 years.

The Idaho Stateman is running a piece from The Sports Network that just gives a general overview of each teams performance in their first 3 games and what to expect from each team on both sides of the ball.

We learn plenty from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Defensive tackle Vance Walker returns to practice and will play for Georgia Tech against Mississippi State. Walker missed much of the fourth quarter against Virginia Tech after taking a nasty blow to the head.

This weekend’s game will be a homecoming for 7 players on the Mississippi State team that were recruited out of the metro Atlanta area to play for the Bulldogs, including safety De’Mon Glanton.

Safety Keith Fitzhugh (Lovejoy High School), Michael Gates (Sandy Creek), Quarterback Terrance Davis (Salem), wide receiver Jamayel Smith (Riverwood), defensive tackle Kyle Love (North Clayton), and tight end Brandon Henderson (Fayette County) are also from metro Atlanta.

Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson held his weekly press conference on Tuesday and JacketsOnline.com has some highlights from it, including Johnson’s priase for the Mississippi State defense:

Looking at Mississippi State, they are a physical, fast, aggressive football team. They are really good defensively. They have a great punter. They are pretty good at the kicking game. Offensively, they have some good skill guys- the tailback is a good player. Actually, both of them are good players. They have a really good wide receiver. They have weapons and will be a challenge for us so we have to continue to get better. Defensively, they are probably the best team we have played.

Kyle Veazey reports that Keith Fitzhugh has been named captain for this weeks game. Croom says that Atlanta is our top out-of-state recruiting area and a win this weekend would probably help seal up some verbal committments we have from Atlanta area players.

Finally, the AJC expects this to be a low scoring affair with Mississippi State’s offense ranked 103rd in total offense and Georgia Tech ranked 65th, but still having issues of its own (11 turnovers in 3 games).
