Mississippi State – Georgia Tech Preview
After a great defensive effort in the 3-2 loss to Auburn, Mississippi State travels to Atlanta this weekend to take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Even though these two teams were in the same conference for 30 years (1933-1963), this will only be the third game ever between these two teams. In fact, the last time they faced off was in 1929 when the John Heisman-led Yellow Jackets beat then-Mississippi A & M. They also played in 1908.
Of course Mississippi State fans are proud of the heritage of their home staidum, Scott Field – the second oldest on-campus stadium in the NCAA, but who has the oldest? Georgia Tech. Their home field, Grant Field, was built 1 year before Scott Field in 1913.
Alright, enough history. How will these two teams match up? Georgia Tech’s head coach, Paul Johnson, runs a triple-option offense. Mississippi State’s defense is allowing an average of 3 runs per play and has only allowed 3 touchdowns the entire season. Georgia Tech has had 11 fumbles in their first 3 games. That number isn’t really that outrageous when you consider how much they run the ball – the have only attempted 37 passes.
I look for this to be another low scoring affair. Mississippi State will need to step up on offense and make some plays. Even with the possibility of Anthony Dixon not seeing much playing time, we still have plenty of depth at the running back position with Christian Ducre, Robert Elliot, and Arnil Stallworth.
I am going to call the game Mississippi State 13, Georgia Tech 10.
