Post-UK Wrap-up
I have held off being critical of this team so far this year. Some of you may have caught my “Kick The Field Goal post following the loss to Georgia. It was written in haiste and I decided to pull it down.
The loss to Kentucky yesterday, however, has got me on the warpath again. It seems apparent that not only is our team still developing, but our coaches are as well. We seem to have trouble managing the clock at the end of the game, always putting ourselves in a bad position, especially when we are needing to come from behind.
For instance, yesterday, we take our last time-out on a 3-and-1 play rather than spiking the ball. Even though we scored on that drive to come within 3 of the Wildcats, we ended up kicking the ball back to them with only 2:20 left in the game, and no timeouts to stop the clock. Kentucky ran all over us yesterday and only fumbled once, so it was pretty certain that they would have no trouble running the clock out.
So why are we mis-managing the clock to much? Is it the coaches calling timeouts, or are some of our younger, inexperienced players calling them believing it is the only option? One thing is certain – if we plan to win anymore games this year, we have got to get better and more consistent. Georgia must have played really bad last week for us to look as good as we did.
