SEC Power Poll Ballot – Week 1
Here are is my ballot for the SEC Power Poll after the first week of college football. The only games I didn’t see at least some part of were Ole Miss, Auburn, Arkansas and Kentucky, so I am using post-game notes to judge the performance of those teams.
1. Florida
2. LSU
3. Georgia
4. Alabama
5. Auburn
6. Tennessee
7. Ole Miss
8. South Carolina
9. Vanderbilt
10. Kentucky
11. Arkansas
12. Mississippi State
1. Florida
Even without their star receiver Percy Harvin, the Gators had an easy time against Hawaii, who is now without Heisman runner-up Colt Brennan.
2. LSU
This isn’t the Big 10, and LSU isn’t Michigan. The Tigers had no problem against Appalachian State in their season opener.
3. Georgia
If Georgia is the #1 team in the country, they should have shut out Georgia Southern. Did they put in the second string defense in the fourth quarter?
4. Alabama
Most people thought that this game would be closer. After all, Clemson is the best that the ACC has to offer this year. It looks like the Tide is about a season ahead of schedule under Saban.
5. Auburn
Auburn had an easy time with La Monroe. They were even able to pull it off without opening up much of the spread-oriented playbook of new offensive coordinator Tony Franklin. Auburn has Southern Miss up next before kicking off their SEC schedule at Mississippi State.
6. Tennessee
I just finished watching this game. And what a game. Tennessee looked good on offense, but their defense had more holes than swiss cheese during the second half, especially with that drive by UCLA in the last minute or so of the 4th quarter.
7. Ole Miss
Ole Miss took care of Memphis without a problem using the “Wild Rebel” offense. Jevan Snead looked good in his first game as well.
8. South Carolina
I think there are problems in South Carolina. Their QB situation is in limbo and they weren’t able to score until well into the game when the NC State defense was tired. Against a greater opponent, this score could have easliy been the other way around.
9. Vanderbilt
Vandy looked good in its season opener against Miami – of Ohio. This was their first win since October 27 of last year – against the same team. We will see how Vandy does come conference play.
10. Kentucky
Kentucky seemed to play a strong game against a Louisville team that just hasn’t been the same since Petrino left for the NFL. Looks like the Wildcat defense will carry the team (that sounds familiar) while the offense plays catch up after losing many starters.
11. Arkansas
Looks like another case of a better conditioned team beating a tired team in the 4th quarter. Petrino has a lot of work to do in Fayetteville after the loss of team workhorses McFadden and Jones.
12. Mississippi State
Where do I begin. The 5 turnovers? The terrible special teams play? Leaving a JUCO tranfer in when the game was on the line? Abandoning the run (that was working well) in the second half? Oh, and we lost our senior linebacker for the season. Same old story, different year.
