The 2004 MiSSBies
Presenting the 1st Annual Mississippi State Sports Blog Football awards:
Most Valuable Player – Jerious Norwood, RB – with Norwood’s emergance, so emerged MSU chances at competing in the SEC.
Offensive Player of the Year – Norwood – 3rd Leading rusher in the SEC in 2004 (1050 yds) and will most likely finish his career as the most prolific back in MSU history.
Defensive Player of the Year – Willie Evans, DE – led the team in solo tackles (47) and was 2nd in total tackles (67). Aslo led the team in sacks (5.5). Willie is State’s best defensive player since Mario Haggans.
Special Teams Player of the Year – Jared Cook, P – led the SEC in net punting (43.7 yds)
Freshman of the Year – Titus Brown, LB – His play helped win the Kentucky game and perhaps the Florida game. Finished 4th in total tackles (59).
Assistant Coach of the Year – Ellis Johnson, Def. Coor. – Improved last year’s 12th ranked defense to 8th in the SEC. The defense gave up almost 2 touchdown less in 2004 than last year. Only two blow outs compared to last year’s 7 or 8.
Most Improved Player – Slovakia Griffith, DB – Led the team in tackles.
Most Disappointing Player – Will Prosser, WR – I thought possesion receivers were supposed make the tough catches on third down.
Senior We Wish had Another Year of Eligiblity – David Stewart, OL – Probably the most consistent player on the line. Had a mean streak.
Best Coaching Decision – Starting two freshman and converted sophmore DB to linebacker. The move put a lot more speed on the field and showed recruits production not class mattered.
Worst Coaching Decision – Not pulling Omar Connor after the 2nd Quarter in the LSU game. The knee injury he suffered early in the third quarter possibly cost State wins versus UAB and Vandy.
