The SEC Power Poll Coaches Edition Part 1

This year I am participating in the SEC Power Poll, a collection of bloggers from the various SEC schools that will, week in and week out, rank the teams in the SEC. If you want to see a list of the blogs participating, head on over to my SEC Power Poll page.

The first poll we will be releasing is the coaches poll. Here is how I see the SEC coaches stacking up.

12. Bobby Johnson
It’s hard for Vandy to compete in the SEC consistently. Sure, they occasionally upset their in-state rival Tennessee or some other team that they blindside, but they just don’t seem to have what it takes. At Vandy, it is all about doing more with less, and until Bobby can do that, he stays at the bottom.

11. Rich Brooks
Sure, he had a good run last year, but a lot of that was the play of his quarterback. He has helped build the Kentucky program up from the shambles that Mumme left it in, but still isn’t competing for titles in the SEC east.

10. Bobby Petrino
Petrino is a bit of a mystery this year. He did well at Louisville but has never coached in the SEC. I also think his eye will always be focused on that next big gig. At least Broyles is out of the way to allow the head coach to actually do well.

9. Houston Nutt
I have never been really blown away by Houston “Giggity Giggity” Nutt, although it is always entertaining to watch him melt down on the sideline. I also hate Ole Miss, so maybe I should have put him at the bottom just for that. He seemed to recruit well at Arkansas, but it was THE university in the state. At UM, he will be competing against 2 other schools, as well as the usually out-of-state schools that like to rape Mississippi of talent.

8. Phil Fulmer
Sure, its Tennessee, but they just haven’t been the same team that we remember seeing during the Manning years, or even during Tee Martin’s tenure. They haven’t won a national title in 10 years. He has recently had a turnover of coordinators, and David Cutcliffe has left again. It will be interesting to see how UT fairs this year.

7. Sylvester Croom
The Bulldog in me natrually wants Croom at the top of the list. In the first 3 years of his tenure, State was the worst team in the conference, even with suprise wins over Florida and Bama. I think that really just showed everyone what terrible shape Jackie left the team in. After and 8 win season and a victory in the Liberty Bowl, the Maroon faithful are looking to bigger and better things this year. Croom is definitely a great motivator, but is he a good head coach? This year will be the deciding factor of whether he gets into the top 6.

So, what are your thoughts on my rankings so far? Let me know if you agree or disagree with my bottom 6. Comments are open.

The top 6 coaches in the SEC are coming up next. Stay tuned.
