Tyler Russell Talks To Steve Spurrier
Looks like the Ol’ Ball Coach is taking an interest in Meridian’s Tyler Russell. Spurrier had actually never showed any interest in him at all until he got a call from our old friend Woody McCorvey. GoGamecocks.com broke this story Monday.
“Coach Spurrier called me last Monday,” Russell said. “He wanted me to come in this weekend but I’m playing in the Mississippi-Alabama All Star Game. I’ll probably take a visit there in late December or early January.”
Russell said it was former Mississippi State offensive coordinator Woody McCorvey who tipped off Spurrier about him. Spurrier got some film of Russell and apparently liked what he saw. “He said I was the type of guy they want to get in there this year,” Russell said. “They are going to take one quarterback and he indicated I’m the guy he wants.”
Tyler is also still getting interest from Alabama, but is staying verbally committed to Mississippi State. The type of coach we bring in (and his offense) would be a big deciding factor in whether Tyler comes to Starkville or not. He was contacted by AD Greg Byrne after Sylvester Croom resigned.
“He said he can’t talk about the candidates with me but he wants to get someone in there who wants to open up the offense. I’m still committed to Mississippi State but I’m waiting to see what kind of coach they get. I’m kind of open but still committed. I can’t burn any bridges because you don’t know what kind of offense the new coach will run.”
I think if the rumors are true that Kevin Wilson is a serious candidate, that would be a great step towards keeping Tyler committed. Dan Mullen at Florida would also be a good choice.
National Signing Day 2008 is February 6.
